Sarah Gail Brand

Sarah Gail Brand was born in London in 1971. Described by The Wire magazine as the most exciting trombone player for years, Sarah has recorded and performed on the international Improvised Music and Jazz scene since the early 1990s with, amongst others Derek Bailey, Elton Dean, Evan Parker, Phil Minton, Veryan Weston, Lol Coxhill, Wadada Leo Smith, Maggie Nicols, Luc Ex, Alex Maguire and Claude Deppa.
Sarah has a long-standing and acclaimed duo with drummer Mark Sanders,
extending to a quartet with John Edwards and Steve Beresford and continues to work as a soloist and in ad hoc ensembles. Sarah has appeared regularly on BBC Radio, as a performer and programme presenter.
As well as being a composer, Sarah’s trombone work ranges from playing Improvised Music and Jazz, studio session work to arranging brass section music and playing in pop and rock groups. Sarah has PhD in musicology, examining Improvised Music and Interrelation.
Sarah is a state registered music therapist, specializing in the field of forensic psychiatry. She is also a professor of Improvisation at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London and leads workshops on improvisation around the world.
